Have Joy, Have Fun, Have a Season in the Sun

I receive many questions at the beginning of each season from friends and clients wondering what is appropriate when it comes to trends, age and body type. While I don’t think of myself as the fashion police, I am always happy to offer advice from my many years in the fashion industry.

If you are under 30 and you feel comfortable with less coverage, enjoy the current trend of short shorts. This cut is even more popular than usual this season. Remember that a wedge heel shoe will elongate your legs visually. Remember to keep your look simple and don’t try to make the shorts anything they aren’t.

How do I choose a pant pattern that works with my body type?

Begin with a cut and silhouette similar to what you normally wear. If you prefer a skinny pant or boot cut leg, opt for a smaller pattern. Larger prints tend to emphasize the leg and butt area unless the print is in a muted color scheme. If a patterned pant makes you nervous, wear a colored pant instead. Keep your top simple, and accent with jewelry or a summer weight scarf. A colored shoe will tie it all together.

Is suede an option for spring and summer?

Absolutely! Designers have worked with manufacturers to create a lighter-weight suede for spring and summer. This suede breathes and still offers you that luxe look. Search for colors in soft shades for the season, just right for that carefree look. Pair a soft suede shoe with light fabrics such as silk, cotton or polyester. For a relaxed, casual look, chambray denim is a great option, along with a simple tee.

Can I wear white before Memorial Day?

Forever yes, you can wear white year round. Enjoy the possibilities!

Should age dictate whether to choose a one-piece or two-piece bathing suit?

This is truly a question of comfort. If you are over 45 and wear a bikini, send me a photo and I will send you a personal shout out. There are so many options for suits. Take your time trying them on, and when you come upon a style and fit that are comfortable and make you want to smile, you know you have found a winner. This can be a daunting process for many women, so be gentle with yourself.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and contact me if there is any way I can help you transition to summer while staying cool, comfortable and stylish.

From my closet to yours,

Suzanne
